KarmaClub met Kopi Kalyan in 2021 when the founders had already built 4 successful branches: Cikajang, Barito, BSD, and Tokyo. They were excited to keep growing Kopi Kalyan but wanted to stay true to their original concept: a cozy coffee shop that offers high-quality coffee and delicious food.
We built our relationship with Kopi Kalyan's founders, Iman, Dicky, and Putri, based first on friendship and understanding their dreams for Kopi Kalyan. Dicky excelled at finding great locations at affordable prices, Putri is an architect and transformed old houses into beautiful cafes, and Iman managed the budget and ensured coffee and food quality were up to part. We started with 1 branch together in Wijaya and helped Kopi Kalyan structure a revenue share and raise funds from investors.
One common challenge for F&B brands looking to expand is figuring out how to grow at the pace they want. They might aim for 6 big branches or 20 smaller ones. Sometimes, with investors involved, founders may find themselves at odds with their investors' wants and needs. On the other hand, expanding through franchises can lead to compromised product and service quality, hence putting the company's brand at risk. We at Karma believe that every brand can succeed because of the founders' passion. We know that every founder has dreams for their brand, and we stand to support those dreams.
Two years later, KarmaClub has backed Kopi Kalyan in opening 3 branches (Wijaya, Menteng, and Surabaya) and is there to continue supporting the founders to grow at their own pace. As the brand grows its branch network and back office operations become more complicated, we're continuing to be partners by working together to provide an inventory management system and revenue reconciliation tool.
